Atlanta's rad rockers The Swear will be making another Nashville appearance tonight Thursday, June 7 at the Rutledge. Local band My Beautiful Disaster will be playing too during the Rutledge's Week o' Rock.

I'm so there and you better be too!

Spring Breakage

Hello rock n' rollers-

So spring break draws near for the MTSU crowd. While classmates cruise off to Cancun or wherever all the kids go these days, I'll be perusing the Nashville clubs for some shows. Check these puppies out.

Saturday, February 24:
AutoVaughn will be hitting up 12th and Porter with Brenn and The Rewinds. AutoVaughn is headed to SXSW in March, so catch 'em now before they come back all cool and famous 'n such.

Saturday also marks the opening of the f.y.e. in the old Tower building on West End. I will be interested to see how f.y.e. does. Go to the festivities though. There shall be song and dance!

Friday, March 2:
My Beautiful Disaster will be jamming on the square in Murfreesboro with Caprice and Dead Sun. If you haven't ever been to Wallstreet, check it out. It has a great vibe, nice and clean, and who knew so much rocking out could happen on the second floor?

Man so much goodness in the boro that night. Two co-workers of mine from the MTSU music school will be playing at The Boro Bar and Grill, the vermicious k'nids and Alex Grant. Muchos rocking to be done I'm sure. Also playing: the transcenders and Tequila.

Monday, March 5:
The Swear will be playing at BMI's 8th of 8th! I happened to see the Swear at a show at Exit/In in late '06 and they absolutely blew me away. I mean rarely do bands completely impress me the first time around. I was excited to learn that this Atlanta band has been featured on TV shows (including the cult TV show Roswell) and all kinds of elsewheres. Seriously, I can't wait to see where this band will go and I am jumping on their bandwagon RIGHT NOW. You should too. Or in the very least, go check them out at the Mercy Lounge. Rad. (Sorry kids...21+)

Other business:

There has been so much going on lately. Guess I must pick and choose for now.

In light of the recent announcement of Starwood's closing, I guess I must do the mandatory "Tell about your Starwood experience..."
I went to Starwood 3 times in my 20 years of living in Nashville. My first concert (don't judge me...) was Matchbox 20 and Paula Cole (keep in mind this was during my extreme Dawson's Creek addiction phase). My sister taught me that night what pot smells like.

At some point, my sister and I went out to Starwood to see Counting Crows and Live. Both put on a good show, but we were both there to see Live. And they are glorious, especially live.

The last time I graced Starwood with my presence was to see Jimmy Buffett on a double and half date including me and this particularly cute fellow, this parents, and his youth minister. Honestly, out of the three concerts, I think the Buffett concert is the one that will make me miss Starwood most because the outdoor venue was PERFECT for the show. (Not to mention Mr. Buffett made fun of the Harpeth Hall girls short skirts. Yeah he mentioned my high school during the show).

In truth, Starwood has been doomed for a while now. I think it's pretty sad that Live Nation promised the 2007 season and then yanked it when the right deal came along, but I think good things will eventually come out of this. One day...way off in the future.

Alas, I must whisk myself off to the electronics lab to build circuits. Let me know what shows you are seeing and what shows I should be listing. Before you know it, you too can be guru approved.

Thursday, January 25:
MusiCares Benefit featuring Treva Blomquist, Jeremy Lister, Katie Herzig, Bodhicitta Bellydance (Ooooh!) at 8 pm at The Basement. Sorry kids, this one is 21 and up.

Saturday, January 27:
Dave Barnes will be playing The Cannery Ballroom. I've heard many a good thing about Mr. Barnes and I think he is well worth your time. Besides, if Lightning 100 plays his stuff, then he must be cool.

For those of you looking for something more electronic and rad, check out Wick-It at Cafe Coco on Saturday night. He's got some crazy cool re-mixes on his myspace page including a grooving remix of the Bangles' "Walk like an Egyptian."

Saturday's a hopping night around town apparently. For the rockers at heart, The Worsties, Taylor Sorensen and the Trigger Code, The Lonely Hearts, and Chelsea Scott will be rocking out at the Basement. Should be pretty glorious.

Thursday, February 1:
In a myspace bulletin entitled "Rabid Orphans," Ethan Swim announced they will be showing off their moneymakers at the Boro in Murfreesboro. Expect a new record from these guys later this year.

Saturday, February 3:
Beauty School Dropouts will be doing a live DVD taping at 12th and Porter. If you want to show your support or just mark your absolute coolness for all eternity, you don't want to miss this event!

Other Tidbits:
Go show some love to the independent. It's a website that I write for and is run by the Todd, the brain behind Nashvillezine. Love it.

Also, I will be starting a photo of the week column there so submit those amazing photos of you chilling with the band or those fab action shots that are just sitting on your hard drive waiting to be discovered.

Resolutions for 2007

Well I know it may seemed like I've abandoned all ye music fans out there. But, being in college is tougher than the movies make it out to be. I survived fall '06 which was deemed "The Hell Semester." Too many group projects and term papers. Just the fact that I'm taking three hours less this semester is promising for the future of this blog. Alas, I graduate in a year and best get this sucker going seeing as how it is officially on my resume now. Enough rambling. Get on with the local love.

For a whole $8 you too can see Sean McConnell and his band (members of the band formerly known as Kixelsyd) will be opening for Jason Boland and the Stragglers at Exit/In. That's right my friends. Drummer Travis Tohill encourages everyone to come out and "shake their moneymakers."

Wednesday, January 17:
Not local in origin, but the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be heating up the GEC with Gnarls Barkley. I saw his album on vinyl at the Great Escape and had a massive craving to own it. Some things just sound better on vinyl...

Thursday, January 18:
For all you returning MTSU students, the koo, Lasalle, and the Masses will be playing Wallstreet at 9:30 p.m. You know all those striped stickers on signs all over MTSU's campus? Yep they belong to the koo. At first I thought they belonged to the masses because one was placed over the word "Mass" on the John Bragg Mass Communications building. Alas, we aren't quite that clever yet.

Friday, January 19:
Fine China (whose website is http://www.youmakemehatemusic.com) will be celebrating the release of their EP at Exit/In. Doors open at 8:00, show at 9. Tickets are $10 and Leigh Nash opens (of Sixpence None the Richer fame). AND with your paid admission, you get a free copy of the EP. Sweet!

For those of you looking to celebrate the success of the Pink Spiders, you can do so on Friday at Rocketown as the band will be performing with Kill Hannah. Tickets are available for $12 from www.selloutpresents.com.

Saturday, January 20:
Get comfy with The Comfies as they play The End. They are touring right now, but made room for a stop in their glorious hometown. Hooray for local rockers.

Other tidbits:
On Sunday, the Tennessean ran a pretty li'l article about local bands and what they will be doing in the upcoming year. There were many major label debuts and other exciting news. Read it and see who you should see before they get famous. Definitely worth a look. It will increase your local music vocabulary.

All ages venues Rocketown and The Muse have both revamped their websites. Go check them out.

I found this site while hunting down shows today. It's got more listings but is not nearly as cool as this blog...right? Anyway, it's good for checking on what's going on around town. Beethere Nashville.

In case you haven't heard, I've scored some major lab assistant hours for the semester. So at least for the beginning of the semester I can promise some good updates during that time (if I'm not too behind on my homework). Enough about me...let's get to the music.

Saturday, September 9:
The Not Just Country television show will be filming its second season beginning on Sept. 9. Filming happens at Opry MIlls Mall at the Giboson Showcase (yes the same place where the Jerry Lewis telethon happened!) Britten and Biscuits and Gravy will play this first show. The show begins at 3 pm and will air on My30 TV in early 2007. For more information, see http://www.njctv.com or here. This is a super opportunity to check out some of the coolest acts around and hey...you might just be on TV!

A little heads up...on Tuesday, September 26, Cowboy Dynamite, Trash Can, Jesus Chainsaw Massacre, Kids are Goats, and Aaron Brownlee will be playing the Muse. My man, Eric Wright will be rocking out so so should the rest of you!

Take it down a notch at JJ's Market with Adrien, James Moore, and others for a good night of indie folk acoustic rock. Yummy. This one is definitely primo for all you high school kids out there begging to get into the scene.

If you have a chance to check out the Nashville Shakespere Festival's production of MacBeth, I'll go ahead and tell you I was less than impressed. Check out my full review of it here.

Melodic Bass Villian: Charlie Roberts

No he does not want to join your band. No he did not take lessons from Victor Wooten.

Yes, he does have a CD for sale. But simply hearing the music of Charlie Roberts is not enough. You must experience the Melodic Bass Villian and his mindblowing approach to playing bass.

Charlie Roberts, a musician in his free time, moves on the bass in ways that even the most knowledgeable bassists could not imagine. When asked what genre of music he plays, Roberts jokingly responded, "ProEx--Progressive Experimental." Truly, it's like nothing you have ever heard before.

Cross Tool with Beethoven and Roberts falls somewhere between. "Imagine a symphony condensed down to one instrument, thats what it sounds like to me." I haven't peaked your interest yet? Trot on over to YouTube and search for Charlie Roberts. Ignore the oddly labeled "Charlie and the dishwasher videos" and find videos of Roberts' "Flow," "Pristine Soul," "The Gift of Funk," and "Pulse." Not impressed yet? Catch him in person.

Unfortunately Roberts has had trouble booking shows elsewhere from the Muse. Most places question how a solo bassist could have anything worthwhile to say and could actually draw a fanbase. At a recent show at the Muse, I watched an entire room full of awe-filled people watch Roberts as though they were followers trying to absorb the teachings of their one and only true master. One woman ranted as she left the venue that she had some sort of religious experience after watching Roberts play, like some sort of miracle had occured.

I can't claim that you to will find yourself overwhelmed by this solo musician, but Roberts represents a true musicianship that is rare in the music industry today. Here is someone saying, "Look I can do it all. Moreover, I can do it all on one instrument." He doesn't hide behind his effects or some MTV structured image. It's just him, his bass, and his amp.

Roberts is quiet while he plays. Rarely does his face wince with effort--rather he seems completely absorbed by the music at hand. Still, the music echoes a kind of passion that even the most romantic among us like to believe is everpresent in the underground music scene.

Summer flies

It's been a while, but the Guru is back in full force. I'm working out at Camp Widjiwagan during the day. It's a day camp and my hours are roughly 7:15am -6 pm. Needless to say after 10.5 hours out in the sun running around with kids all day long, I haven't quite gotten out to as many shows as I would like. BUT...I finally have a huge update for you all, plus there are some awesome rumblings going about the Nashville scene that will be explained in weeks to come. Hooray! Now to what's going on about town.

James Moore will be hitting up the former "back porch" of Cafe Coco with his acoustic soul goodness.

Not so local:
Sister Hazel will be playing a FREE show at Crocket Park on Sunday, June 25. I am SO there. They really are the epitome of summer music. When I roll down the windows and drive around town on a sunny day, Sister Hazel's album is almost always blaring from the speakers.

Other stuff to note:
Not Just Country Nashville is a locally produced show on UPN (channel 30 or 14 on cable) that showcases several local bands to show that Nashville's scene isn't just about country. Support this awesome cause every Saturday night at 1:30 a.m.

Don't forget to buy your Fiona Apple tickets (I just remembered!). On sale now at all Ticketmaster locations.

Hello all-
So my three week uber-hiatus has been rougher than rough at school. 6 hours in three weeks...i would advise against it to all of you. Anyway I just finished up a paper about Kelly Clarkson and American Idol and how it is lulling the music industry into some sort completely false sense of security as they think they can just manufacture this crap product and then distribute it for mass consumption. Of all the "idols," i respect Clarkson the most. The girl can sing, and I have yet to see her compromise her body for media attention, but still...this is not the way artists should be packaged and delivered.

anyway. so my paper is poorly written and all kinds of ugly to read, but I already know I'm going to get less than an A in that class so cheers to a GPA spiraling downward! woo!

In other news, my internet is completely and totally disconnected in my apartment. Apparently it is a widespread thing in the housing units on campus, but I have little hope that it will be coming back on anytime soon. In the meantime I shall have to do reading for my finals on Friday. After Friday, I am all yours scenesters.

Speaking of, pick up this week's Nashville Rage (well...last weeks...) if you haven't already. "41 local acts you should know" There's some good stuff there.

Keep an eye out for shows and leave some love for my stressful 48 hours. Next thing you know, it'll be summer and it'll be shows every night. gah i love summer!

I'm taking classes at MTSU till June 2. Music as Popular Culture and Soundtrack Design *drool.* Anyway, the recommmended course load is four credit hours and I'm taking six. Needless to say, I've been a bit busy. And apparently some of my May posts disappeared into the great worldwide.entangled.web. I promise I will get back to you lovely readers when I get the chance (maybe even tonight after I finish my analytical paper of Live's 1994 Throwing Copper album. Hello all you faithful Nashville scenesters-
I have to heartily apologize for dropping off the face of the earth for the last couple of weeks. Unfortunately, that is the way school goes. Things get crazy at the end of the semester and you just gotta hold on tight to have a prayer of getting through. But enough about me and my struggles with finals for the next ten days or so. There have been some awesome shows since we last talked. Rites of Spring was this past weekend. If you have photos, please submit them to be posted. Also I made an appearance at the Muse last weekend to see Charlie Roberts wowing his loyal followers. I'm not joking when I say that one lady in attendence claimed she thought she was witnessing some kind of holy experience. It was a good show and fun was had by all.

As spring (or summer as you might call it in middle Tennessee) gets cranking there are all kinds of shows going on. Here's a rundown of some of the good stuff coming up. Just a reminder, if you've got shows you want to publicize, let me know and I'll get it up here ASAP.

Great Big Shows will be sponsoring an even bigger show at Exit/In tomorrow, Tuesday, April 25, with Flickerstick, Actress, and The Cry Room.

James Moore will spread the love on Wednesday, April 26 @ Caffeine. Grab a cup of java and enjoy what this up-and-comer has got to show. Before I forget to mention it, he will also be playing at May 3 at the Bluebird and May 13 at Cafe Coco. Both yummy venues with even yummier music.

Doghouse Record stars Cruiserweight and Feable Weiner will be kicking off their "TOUR OF THE YEAR" on Thursday, April 27 at The End on Elliston Place. If you can't make that show, they will be swinging thru Murfreesboro on May 26 at Wallstreet. But more on that as it gets closer. In the meantime, if you want to leave a message for the FW boys, you can call their hotline at 615-424-7070.

Thursday will also be the night that Rosco will be playing a show at 12 and Porter. Go enjoy some rocking tunes in one of the chillest bars in Nashville.

On Friday, April 28 Cottrell Grant will be playing the 5 spot with Phoenix Rising and Honeysuckle. 18+, $5.

If you need your punk rock dosage for the month, check out Punk Rock Party Number 10 at The Muse on Saturday, April 29. Two Atlanta bands will join Nashville's own Off Duty Ninjas and The Wombats. Yummy.

Charlie Roberts will grace the Muse with his "ProEx" bass playing. Gotta check him out if you haven't already. Wednesday May 3. All Ages. $5

Don't forget, They Might Be Giants will be playing City Hall on May 5. I will do my best to be there (I gotta get out of working a track meet...). The last two times I've seen them in Nashville have been AWESOME. Definitely a live show you do not want to miss.

A band who I never thought I would see play the Muse again, Ethan Swim will be playing there on Sunday, May 7. It shall be a show to remember for sure.

Shirock will be playing Exit/In on Tuesday, May 9. I really am going to try to make it out to this show because Shirock is one of those bands that will recreate some kind of religious experience at Exit/In...seriously. Go see this because it will change your life.

May 18 means The Worsties will be hitting up Cafe Coco acoustic style. Don't know their stuff yet? Go see them on May 13 at Windows on the Cumberland. You will certainly be pleased with the besties from the Worsties!

Uber-stressed

Hey loyal readers and scenesters--

Bad news for the short term: It's the end of the semester and I am so stressed it's not even funny. I have SO much work to do over the course of the next two weeks that I don't think I'm going to have time to update this baby. So, if you've got a show or something to say, post a comment and we'll all check those regularly.

I should be back around April 24 or so.

Alas, this is the joys of being in school. Some weeks just royally suck. Keep rocking out and send me pictures of what's going on out there.

And something else: My thoughts and prayers are with all the tornado victims.

Rutherford County is under a tornado warning...which means...our tornado sirens are going off! Which means, i can't leave my apartment quite yet to go home, so you, the local music scenesters get an update. Lucky you! ;)

Tin Pan South is taking over the city as we speak. There are many great singer-songwriters in all the clubs. The up-and-comers and the oldies. See their website for a full listing of shows or see the ad in this week's Nashville Scene.

Saturday, April 1:
It's no April Fools joke, there are many good shows...here's a sampling.

Hot off the New Orleans presses (thanks Stephen Kraft!), Frogs Gone Fishin', Lost Dog, Indicia, Angus White & The Irish Redneckers, and The Zoo will be playing at Centennial Park. Pretty park and pretty music. Good combo. 11 am.

If you are looking for some synth pop April Fools fun, go see How I Became the Bomb, Girls and Boys and Masa @ The Basement. 9pm.

Born Empty will rock The End with Prom Night, Crank Sinatra, and The Vindicates (all great band names in my opinion.) Born Empty puts on one of the best live shows of all the bands out there. $5. 9 pm.

Finally, The Carter Administration will be playing @ 3 Crow Bar at 9:30 p.m. with the Clutters. $5.

Just another announcement that I am super excited about, They Might Be Giants will be playing City Hall on May 5 (the day after my THREE finals...). They always play good stuff, and TMBG noted on their website that their last visit to Nashville for the short-lived Sobro Summer Nights was one of the best shows of their summer tour, (despite the guy who rushed the stage *rolls eyes*).

In all my multi-tasking glory, I managed to put my t-shirt on backwards this morning. I have a hoodie on over it, but I am sitting in the office today and something keeps itching at my neck. Yep...it's the tag.

Ladies and gents, it's just my way of saying, it's gonna be one of those weeks.

Luckily there is some good music out there. Don't forget Daylight Savings starts on Sunday morning so spring forward!

Lovelife will be rocking out at the Muse.

Labeling Deloris will be hitting The End stage with The Hollywood Kills, Nick Edelstein and The Remedy at 9 pm.

Wednesday, March 29:
Lowercase Collective and The Roman Empire will be squaring off against other local favorites at Exit/In for Emergenza. Go vote and show some love! For the complete emergenza schedule, click here.

Thursday, March 30
Want to see the latest in high school talent? Hume-Fogg will be hosting their annual battle of the bands. 6 pm. $5 @ Hume-Fogg (on Broadway)

Thursday, March 23: (The night of beauty...)
My Beautiful Disaster will be playing for the first time in a while out at The Pond in Franklin. 10 pm.

Beauty School Dropouts will be taking the stage at 12 and Porter with Hurt and Shadow Wax. Doors @ 8:30. Tix are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. BSD reports the show is almost sold out so get your tickets quick!

The Worsties will be rocking the beloved 5 Spot featuring Life Like Sophie and Ballroom Dancing (the band, but feel free to dance like so if you feel the itch). 8:30 pm. $5.

Friday, March 24:
Ethan Swim will rock the Boro. See below post for more details. Yummy!

Saturday March 25:
Autumn People and James Moore @ The Lounge (next to 12 and Porter). James Moore of formerly The Risk fame. According to his myspace page, he is taking a semester off to do the working in Nashville thang. I'm intrigued to see how this little project is turning out, as should you be. 9 pm.

Shirock will be playing at Vandy on the Alumni Lawn. Outdoors and free. Does music get any better than that? 7:30 pm-ish.

Movement Nashville presents AutoVaughn's CD release show at The Mercy Lounge with Jeremy Lister and Bang Bang Bang. It'll be one grand night of music. 9 pm. $10 for 18-21, $7 for 21+.

Sunday, March 26:
New Orleans based rockers Mute Math and The Working Title will be showing some love at Exit/In. This show is part of the Album Release Tour 2006 and the album will exclusively be available at the show. Tickets are limited so go ahead and hook yourself up. $12. All Ages. 6 pm.

No excuses. Make a show. Support the scene. Show some love.

Sadly, Nashville music site Nashvillezine.com will be shutting down. I wish it were some cruel early April Fools joke, but it's not. You shall be missed!

Good news? This weekend there were many good shows. If you've got photos or reviews, feel free to swing me an email and let me know.

I personally made an appearance at the lowercase collective/dan matthews show at 12th and Porter Thursday night. Although I dragged my slow self in a few minutes late, I was still impressed by the indie prog-rock played by lowercase collective. If the music didn't get you, the multimedia presentation sure did. With lyrical quotes between songs and a barrage of visual candy, I left the show feeling both entertained and sensationally pleased.

Dan Mathews followed up with an impressive set. Mathews' piano and musical skills were more than impressive and his band's musicianship completed the picture perfectly. Their music was eclectic. Some blues riffs, some classical work, and some straight up college rock. I'll be interested to see what else we see of this Belmont student in the future. What I'd like to see: Dan Mathews perform with band on a real live piano. His keys work was great, but I think the emotion of his music would hit home more of I heard it Ben Folds style on the REAL keys. I know, you can't lug a baby grand to every performance if you aren't Ben Folds. But Mr. Mathews, when you do hit the ivory, let me know.

Dan Mathews will be playing on March 29 @ Windows on the Cumberland with the Reed Pittman Band.

Lowercase collective will be playing at local music lover The Basement on March 22 with Sleeptalker, Gracer, and Your Black Star. Also, they will be playing in the final round of audience-voting Emergenza Festival @ The Exit/In on March 29. Go see and vote for lowercase and The Roman Empire. After this round, it's all up to the judges, so don't miss the chance to cast your vote!

Other shows for the week will be posted later this week. I've got schoolwork out the wazoo and a business plan to halfway complete.

For a good cause, go to the WMTS 88.3 Benefit show at the Boro featuring The 8th Grade, Cry Room, and Cottrell Grant. Show kicks off around 9. Expect to pay $5. Remember it's for a good cause!

Friday, March 17:
Great show at the Muse. 7 pm, $7. Appearances by Cryptorchild Chipmunk, Multicellular Sound Generation, Stiff Resistance, Juan Prophet Organization, and Charlie Roberts (see below post...). Wear green and drink beer for St. Patty's day!

Saturday, March 18:
The Beauty School Dropouts will be gracing the Exit/In stage. Two shows. Early show is all ages, second show is 18+. Pay for the first, and re-enter the second for FREE!They will be joined by Falling for Yesterday and Cecil Adora. First show doors open @ 5:00, second at 9:00. $7.

Sunday, March 19:
Luke Easterling's Senior Bass Recital featuring fellow bandmates from Popular Genius and Marcus Hill, C.T. Blackmore, Cara Pollock @ The Belmont Performing Arts Center (Massey) at 5:00 pm.

Monday, March 20:
Labeling Deloris will be having a blast at Mercy Lounge at 9:30 pm.

Finally, a couple of save the dates:
Cruiserweight and Feable Weiner will be kicking off their tour on Thursday April 27, at The End. For those in the Boro who can't make it out, never fear, the tour will come to a close in our humble town of Murfreesboro at Wallstreet (on the square) on May 26. It shall be quite yummy.

Tornadoes ripping thru TN. No wait....

ROCK is ripping thru TN. Bobby Holland of Ethan Swim just informed me that they have a show next Friday, March 24 at the Boro. Their partners in rock will be Finding Steve Cunningham, Murphey, and Espaso. $5. 9 pm. Bring your own PA. It will be an exciting night in the Boro. Come see!
